Culture and tradition in the houses and hotels of the Pitiusas Islands

The local style is summed up beautifully in the “fincas”, the typical country houses built with local materials, low and square shaped, by the thick, typically white walls, small windows to keep the sun from invading the environments, and with the only decorative elements entrusted to the solidity of local wood.

But what remains today of this historical legacy, in the landscape and in the buildings around the two islands?

The traditional style actually has never been abandoned and still remains in use, although enriched over the years.

The more recent history of constructive art in Ibiza and Formentera, is made of schools and architects who have often taken the very functional of the local houses, adapting it though to the taste and the changes of time.

Such as Erwin Broner, painter and architect who after the war founded the "Ibiza59" group, ushering in a style that combined tradition with modernity, whose prefect example is today Casa Broner, his home at Sa Penya (renovated in 2010).

Even today, in addition to the restoration of old fincas, there has been a recovery of the traditional style, after all perfectly compatible with most current concepts like sustainability.

In addition to the aesthetic canons (low buildings, flat roof, clean lines, rigourously white), the use of high quality materials found on site is retained, suited to the climate of the island, such as straw and wood for the structure and local soil for coatings and plasters.

Tradition is therefore alive, more than ever, even in the accommodation facilities available for tourists:

• in the countryside houses renewed and enriched with refined outdoor areas and pools
• in modern villas, often designed by internationally renowned architects, which do not give up the shapes and colors of the past
• in rural hotels, derived from old farm buildings, oasis of peace surrounded by nature but with all comforts
